MXXM is a live electronic performance from music maker Simon Cullen based on Steve Reichs seminal work Music for 18 Musicians. Where the 2016 project Music for 18 Machines employed a wall of 18 Synthesisers to reproduce Reich’s score, MXXM is a departure from a direct interpretation and instead incorporates elements from the piece, familiar rhythms and patterns, in a performance closer to a live remix. Part programming, part improvisation, and equal parts machines and musicians, this performance is designed more for the dance hall, while still channeling the psychedelic and psychoacoustic spirit that is a cornerstone of the original work.
