R.F. Chaney is the solo project of composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Ross Chaney. Though Chaney’s background is steeped in jazz and later, electronic music, he is an in-demand collaborator and producer traversing many different genres both traditional and contemporary.
Chaney is most well known for his innovative collaboration with experimental Irish folk artist John Francis Flynn playing tape machine, drumset and synthesisers. Chaney was a core collaborator on Flynn’s sophomore release Look Over the Wall, See the Sky, featuring in numerous Top 10 albums of 2023 by notable international publications such as The Quietus, Loud and Quiet and The Atlantic among others, Chaney was also a collaborator on Flynn’s debut album I Would Not Live Always – voted ‘Best Folk Album of 2021’ by The Guardian, and winner of two RTÉ folk awards for ‘Best Folk Singer’ and ‘Best Emerging Artist.’
Chaney has lately focused on his own solo output. His debut solo album as R.F. Chaney, Tropism, mastered by Grammy Award-winning engineer Ben Rawlins, was released on the 23rd of November 2023 via Split Decision.
The debut album from Ross Chaney reveals his unique ‘chamber-electronic’ compositional approach that strives to tastefully combine rich textures of synthesisers and electronic instruments with Nordic jazz inspired acoustic instrumentation of saxophones, clarinets and double bass.
Ross has also performed as an accompanist with Lankum, Jape, Anna Mieke, Rachael Lavelle, Cinderwell, Iona Zajac, Ispíní na hÉireann, Kevin Fowley, Seamas Hyland, Subplots, Sam Comerford, Cloud Castle Lake, Caimin Gilmore, Anna Clock, Kilian O’Flanagan and Cathal Caulfield, among many others.
